Following an emergency congress held on July 24, 2025, ASUU-UNIMAID, alongside the Student Union Government and stakeholders, described the move as:

A flagrant disregard for university autonomy

A disruption of academic tradition

A direct affront to UNIMAID’s heritage and identity

ASUU asserts that the renaming was arbitrary, ill-conceived, and lacked proper consultation with the university community, alumni, and the public.

The union demands an immediate and unconditional reversal of the decision.

ASUU-UNIMAID has resolved to pursue legal action to preserve the university’s original identity.

ASUU calls on all branches, zones, and the national body to:

Resist legislative endorsement of the name change

Engage civil society, students, and the National Assembly

Defend the autonomy and integrity of Nigeria’s public universities.
