Aston Villa has reached an agreement with Atletico Madrid for Matteo Ruggeri, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Villa will pay a fixed fee of €25 million for the Italian left-back, with another €1.5 million available through bonuses. Personal terms have already been settled, and Ruggeri is expected to travel to England for his medical.
The agreement will bring Ruggeri’s time in Madrid to an end after one season. Atletico signed him from Atalanta during the summer of 2025 as part of a defensive rebuild that also included Marc Pubill.
Ruggeri went on to make 47 appearances in all competitions and provided seven assists. He regularly played on the left side of Atletico’s defense and also operated further forward when the team used wing-backs.
The 24-year-old developed at Atalanta, where he progressed from the academy into the senior squad. He made more than 100 appearances for the Italian club and was part of the team that won the Europa League in 2024.
Ruggeri is a natural left-sided player who is comfortable carrying the ball forward and delivering crosses from wide areas. His experience as both a full-back and wing-back should allow Villa to use him in several defensive systems.
Villa had considered other options for the position but moved decisively once an agreement for Ruggeri became possible. The club has now settled both the transfer conditions with Atletico and the player’s proposed contract.
Atletico stands to recover more than it initially invested in Ruggeri. The Spanish club reportedly paid approximately €17 million plus bonuses last summer, meaning a completed transfer would produce a profit after only one campaign.
For Villa, the deal adds a player with experience in Serie A, La Liga and European competition. Ruggeri is also entering the strongest years of his career and arrives with room to increase his value in England.
