The second season of the Asian Legends League in Lusaka has reportedly descended into chaos, plagued by mismanagement, unpaid bills, and organisational failures on multiple fronts.
Organisers apparently failed to hand over funds they’d already agreed to pay, leaving local vendors, broadcast crews, and venue staff without compensation for their work.
Several well-known players, India’s Ambati Rayudu among them, packed up and left Lusaka soon after touching down, citing poor facilities, ongoing technical issues, and matches that kept getting postponed.
Matters reached a breaking point when organisers suddenly declared what was originally just a regular group-stage fixture between Indian Royals and Sri Lankan Lions to be the tournament’s official final.
Sri Lankan Lions were subsequently named champions despite having completed only a handful of their scheduled matches.
Numerous international players and support staff remain stranded in Lusaka, still trying to sort out unpaid travel arrangements, a situation that has triggered demands for a joint investigation involving multiple cricket boards.
PCB action against Pakistan players over unsanctioned league
Several former Pakistan internationals now find themselves at risk of disciplinary bans from the PCB after signing up for the unsanctioned tournament in Zambia, with more than a dozen having registered to take part.
Last week, the Zambia Cricket Union, the country’s officially recognised governing body, issued a statement making clear that the league carried no sanction, approval, or endorsement from their organisation.
The PCB has since reinforced that position, confirming it has taken serious note of former Pakistan players competing in the event. According to the board, since the tournament lacked proper sanctioning, the involvement of its players has left it with no choice but to pursue disciplinary action.
“In light of the above, the following disciplinary measures will be taken on individuals found to have participated in the said unsanctioned event without obtaining the requisite approvals from the PCB,” the PCB statement said.
“A ban of two years from the issuance of any PCB No Objection Certificate (NOC) for participation in approved overseas cricket leagues or events. [And] Ineligibility for any cricketing, coaching, consultancy, mentoring and/or other assignments with the PCB and the PSL for a period of two years.”

According to Cricinfo, Mohammad Hafeez, Sohail Tanvir, and Umar Akmal had all signed contracts and travelled to Lusaka intending to play.
However, they ultimately withdrew after discovering the necessary ICC clearances hadn’t arrived. Despite that, several other former Pakistan players are understood to have gone ahead and competed regardless.
Alongside Pakistan Panthers, the remaining teams in the competition were Indian Royals, Sri Lankan Lions, Bangladesh Tigers, Afghanistan Pathans, and Asian Stars, drawing players from nine different nationalities across their rosters.
So far, the PCB stands alone among the participating nations’ cricket boards in publicly labelling player involvement a violation and threatening formal sanctions against those who took part.
