Arsenal have moved to the front of the queue for one of Serie A’s most exciting young strikers Pio Esposito as Mikel Arteta looks to add even more firepower to his title-winning squad.
The Gunners already have Viktor Gyökeres and Kai Havertz, but another physically dominant centre-forward would give Arteta greater depth, especially with Gabriel Jesus attracting interest from Italy.
Their attacking transfer plans have also changed after missing out on Vinícius Júnior, who agreed new terms with Real Madrid.
Arsenal are therefore looking for another high-ceiling attacker, although Manchester United’s interest threatens to turn the pursuit into an expensive Premier League battle.
Arsenal lead the race against Man United
According to The Sun, Arsenal have been monitoring Pio Esposito for months and sent scouts to watch the 21-year-old during Inter Milan’s pre-season derby against AC Milan in Perth.
Inter publicly insist their academy graduate is untouchable, although the report claims a valuation of around £73 million has privately been communicated through intermediaries.
At 6ft 3in, Esposito would provide Arteta with a different attacking profile.
His physical strength, willingness to press and ability to occupy centre-backs could complement Gyökeres rather than simply duplicate him.
Manchester United have also compiled an extensive dossier on the Italy international.
However, they are reportedly prepared to wait rather than immediately submit an offer, potentially giving Arsenal an opportunity to move first.
Inter contract update could ruin it for Premier League clubs
The biggest obstacle may actually come from Inter rather than United.
GOAL reports that Esposito has verbally agreed fresh terms and currently prefers continuing his development at San Siro.
He scored nine goals across Serie A and the Champions League last season as Inter won the Scudetto, strengthening their determination to retain him.
That changes Arsenal’s position considerably. United’s interest could push the price higher, but a player who genuinely wants to stay becomes even harder to sign regardless of money.
Esposito would be an excellent long-term addition, but £73 million is a huge investment for someone who would initially compete with established forwards.
Arsenal should test Inter’s resolve, especially if Jesus leaves, but they should not enter a bidding war with United.
