The Boston Red Sox have been having an overall bad season this year, and one of the biggest reasons for it is because of players being hurt. Their starters have been plagued by injuries, and even the backups as well.

Boston’s middle infield has taken the brunt of the injuries, with guys like Trevor Story, Marcelo Mayer, Isiah Kiner-Falefa, and Nick Sogard all on the IL. However, because of those injuries, the Sox have found they have more depth than they previously thought, as guys like Anthony Seigler are breaking out. 

Seigler was an afterthought

The Red Sox acquired Seigler as a part of the Caleb Durbin trade, alongside Andruw Monasterio and dealt Kyle Harrison, David Hamilton and Shane Drohan. 

He then started the season in AAA, where he tore it up. He was slashing .298/.425/.471/.896 with seven doubles, a triple, three home runs, 21 RBI, and three stolen bases in 30 games. Then, Kiner-Falefa and Sogard got hurt, and he was called up to take their spot.

Seigler’s now tearing up the MLB

Now, Seigler has become an important bat in the Red Sox’s lineup. In 10 games, he’s slashing .333/.394/.533/.927 with three doubles, a home run, and two RBI.

On top of that, he has a whopping 155 wRC+, and is doing well defensively at second base with one Out Above Average (OAA). If Kiner-Falefa’s injury becomes more serious, the Red Sox won’t have to worry about having a quality replacement.

Boston has a long-term utility bat in Seigler

In his short MLB stint, Seigler has shown Boston they have a great backup bat with team control that can replace Kiner-Falefa when his contract runs out this season. In fact, he could be Boston’s answer to second base permanently, if they decide to somehow move on from Story and give Mayer shortstop for the long run.

He might be going down upon super utility man Romy Gonzalez’s return from the IL, but with Mayer injured as well, Seigler could have a bit more time left. Hopefully, he does, and he keeps slashing away like has been.
