Angel Reese produced the type of stat line that almost requires a second look Friday night. The Atlanta Dream star grabbed 16 rebounds during a 79-74 loss to the Washington Mystics, once again dominating the glass and creating additional opportunities for her team.

Finishing those opportunities was an entirely different matter. Reese scored only seven points while shooting 1-of-12 from the field. She also made five of her eight free-throw attempts and contributed two assists and two steals.

The third-year forward remained productive despite the missed shots, but Atlanta could not overcome her difficult offensive performance. The loss dropped the Dream to 19-12 and tightened an already crowded WNBA playoff race.

Reese entered the game with a strong history against Washington, averaging close to 15 points and 14 rebounds in her previous matchups with the Mystics. She continued to control the boards Friday.

Reese collected an offensive rebound with 1:23 remaining and Atlanta trailing by seven, giving the Dream another opportunity to extend the game. She missed the ensuing layup, however, providing a fitting snapshot of her frustrating night.

That was hardly the only opportunity that refused to fall. Reese made just one of her 12 attempts, finishing at 8.3% from the field. It represented a dramatic contrast from Atlanta’s 96-82 victory over the Phoenix Mercury two nights earlier.

Her rebounding prevented the outing from becoming a completely empty performance. Sixteen boards are valuable under any circumstances, and Reese continued battling even as her offensive struggles mounted.

The misses still mattered in a five-point loss. Atlanta needed only a few additional baskets to change the result. Reese will know that several of those chances were available around the rim.

Allisha Gray nearly rescues Dream

Allisha Gray attempted to carry Atlanta through the difficult night. Gray scored 26 points on 11-of-23 shooting while adding six rebounds and two assists. She was the only Dream player to find a consistent offensive rhythm against Washington.

The Mystics received a strong performance from Shakira Austin, who scored 21 points on an efficient 7-of-11 shooting. Washington improved to 18-12 and moved closer to securing its position in the playoff field.

Atlanta fell into a three-way tie with the Indiana Fever and Dallas Wings at 19-12, pending the conclusion of Friday’s matchup between Dallas and the Golden State Valkyries.

The Dream remain in a strong position, but the loss prevented them from creating separation in the middle of the standings.

Atlanta will return home to face the Toronto Tempo on Monday at 8 p.m. ET. Reese will have an opportunity to respond quickly after one of the most inefficient shooting performances of her career.

Seattle Storm eliminated from playoff contention

Washington’s victory also officially ended another team’s postseason hopes. The Seattle Storm became the first WNBA team eliminated from playoff contention in 2026. ESPN’s Alexa Philippou noted that Seattle, sitting at 6-27 with 11 games remaining, can no longer catch Washington in the standings.

The Storm have lost 10 consecutive games heading into Saturday’s meeting with the Portland Fire. Seattle’s season has included the emergence of second-year center Dominique Malonga, who entered the weekend averaging 16.9 points and 8.7 rebounds. That development offers hope for the future, but it could not prevent an early mathematical elimination.

Washington’s win carried consequences throughout the standings. For Reese and the Dream, the immediate concern will be correcting an offensive performance that allowed a winnable game to get away.

Reese has already established herself as one of the league’s most relentless rebounders. Friday’s 16-board performance only strengthened that reputation.

The 1-of-12 shooting line made sure it was a night she will want to leave behind.
