Andy Murray Discloses Candid Rafael Nadal Conversation That Sparked Career-Changing Move In Teen Years
Andy Murray said a conversation with Rafael Nadal as a teenager led him to move to Barcelona to develop his game. The three-time Major champion said the conversation was a wake-up call, as he realized his training at the time fell far short of Nadal’s.
Murray and Nadal, two of tennis’ ‘Big Four’ alongside Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic, took part in an exhibition tournament at the Spaniard’s famed tennis academy in Mallorca. During an interaction with the media, Murray, who reached a career-high ranking of World No. 1, discussed his formative years.
“It was partly thanks to him that I went to train in Spain for two years, starting when I was 15. I moved to Barcelona after talking with him at those tournaments. I had asked him: ‘What does a week look like for you?’ He replied: ‘I go to school in the morning, then I train for two or three hours. I hit with Carlos Moya, among others.’ Then he asked me the same question. I replied: ‘I train for an hour, three times a week, with my mother.’ That’s when I understood that I had to change something.”

Murray also touched on the qualities the Spaniard possessed as a teenager.
“We’ve known each other since we were very young. The first times I saw him play in tournaments, he was different. In the way he played, but also in his attitude, his concentration and his maturity, even though he was only 13 or 14.”

The exhibition tournament Murray and Nadal participated in was a team affair. While Team Murray consisted of the Brit, Marat Safin, Dominic Thiem and Fabio Fognini, Team Rafa featured Nadal alongside compatriots Carlos Moya and David Ferrer, as well as Richard Gasquet of France. Team Rafa won the tournament 4-3.
The 2024 Davis Cup Finals marked the last competitive outing of Nadal’s illustrious career, during which he won 22 Grand Slam titles, including a record 14 Roland Garros triumphs. Many high-profile names in tennis sent farewell messages to the Spaniard, including Murray.
In the message, Murray joked that despite Nadal’s much-admired habit of never taking his on-court frustrations out on his rackets, the Spaniard used to throw around PlayStation controllers after losing to the Brit in a video game.
“You’re probably the only tennis player ever to never throw their racket in anger which is incredible. However, this wasn’t the case when you would lose in the PlayStation. I’ve seen Rafa throwing PlayStation controllers in hotels all over the world when he and his close friend Juan Monaco would lose a late goal to me with his beloved Real Madrid at Pro Evolution Soccer.”

Murray retired from professional tennis a few months before Nadal in 2024. His last competitive match was a men’s doubles quarterfinal loss with Dan Evans at the Paris Olympics.
