Florian Wirtz may have cost Liverpool £116 million to bring in last summer but, he’s failed to impress so far.
Whether he’s used as a left-winger or an attacking midfielder, he’s failed to reach the heights he met when playing for Bayer Leverkusen which is far from ideal.
Most fans thought that the German would easily be able to fill the creative void left by the departure of Trent Alexander-Arnold but, he’s evidently not managed to do that.
This has caused people to question whether it was even worth Liverpool spending all that money on him in the first place.
And, it’s also led to many new rumours being shared about who the Reds could target in the future with many new midfielders already being linked.
Club Tijuana will try and sell Gilberto Mora in the summer
One player who took the 2026 World Cup by storm in the summer was Gilberto Mora.
The 17-year-old was the second-youngest player to ever feature for his country at a World Cup with the only person younger than him being Pele.
The Mexican didn’t manage to get himself a goal or assist during the tournament but, since the Liga MX got back underway, he’s been in fine form.
In the seven games that the attacking midfielder has featured in, he’s managed to score five goals and earn one assist.
Liverpool mentioned as a potential destination for the 17-year-old next summer.
“Liverpool target Gilberto Mora is increasingly likely to leave Tijuana and move to a European club next summer,” Football insider wrote.
“The Reds are long-term admirers of the 17-year-old starlet, but it is expected to be “difficult” for them to strike a deal for him in January.
“Competition for the attacking midfielder’s signature is growing with every passing week, with Real Madrid, Barcelona, PSG and Bayern Munich all keen to snap him up.
“Sources say that Mexican outfit Tijuana intend to cash in on their starlet at the end of the season, when they believe his stock will be at its highest.
“South American players cannot move to Europe until after their 18th birthday, but that will be no such problem for Liverpool next summer, with Mora turning 18 on 14 October.
“The Reds have waited patiently for the chance to secure the starlet, and are now set to see the door opened by Tijuana next summer.
Gilberto Mora could be Liverpool’s next Florian Wirtz
One of the most intriguing things about Mora is his versatility.
Naturally, the 17-year-old is a number 10 and, he’ll regularly feature in that position for Tijuana.
However, there have also been a fair few occasions where the Mexico international has been used as a winger or even a striker.
This alone already makes Mora fairly similar to Wirtz but, the fact that he’d managing to find his feet in his own country before making a move abroad is another eerily similar situation to the German.
Each of them could be useful to Liverpool and, with him still being so young, by the time he’d need to be registered, he’s be classed as homegrown.
This helps solve multiple issues and, while he may not be a finished product just yet, after another season of professional football in Mexico, he’ll probably be closer to taking that step-up which is why a summer move for the midfielder makes plenty of sense.
