Analyst thinks two NFC teams could trade for 49ers QB Mac Jones

It’s only Week 2 of the 2026 NFL season, but some teams could be desperate to make trades that can save their season — particularly at quarterback. The San Francisco 49ers have one of the top backup quarterbacks in Mac Jones just sitting on the bench, and Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox believes two NFC teams could be interested in acquiring the former first-round pick: The Atlanta Falcons and the Minnesota Vikings.

Both teams don’t have a clear quarterback plan at the moment but are trending in opposite directions.

The Falcons’ room is injured, with Michael Penix and Tua Tagovailoa hurt, and the offense looked abysmal with Cooper Rush under center. Trading for an experienced quarterback in Jones who could be what saves their season after the Falcons started 0-1.

The Vikings are in a different boat. They won Week 1 thanks to the arm of Carson Wentz following Kyler Murray’s concussion, but they may want some more stability at the position than leaning on the inconsistent Wentz or hoping for a miraculous comeback from Murray.

Jones, though, could be expensive. The 49ers reportedly wanted at least a second-round pick for him this offseason after he finished the season with a 5-3 record as a starter, including a 69.6 percent completion rate, 2,151 yards, 13 touchdowns and six interceptions. Even more, the 49ers may not be interested in moving such a competent backup quarterback when the team has genuine Super Bowl aspirations in 2026.

However, with Jones set to hit free agency in 2027, the 49ers may be inclined to recoup some draft capital for a player they know they’ll lose this offseason. Knox noted that perhaps the 49ers drop the price to some sort of conditional second-round pick, which could be enough to entice another team to make the deal.
