Amnesty raises alarm over Sokoto attack as death toll hits 32

Amnesty International has condemned a deadly attack by gunmen in Ungushi community of Kebbe Local Government Area of Sokoto State, in which at least 32 people were killed.

The attack, which occurred on Friday afternoon, also left dozens of residents injured, while homes were reportedly set ablaze and shops looted.

According to a statement posted on its verified Facebook page, Amnesty said the attackers invaded the community on motorcycles and first targeted a Juma’at mosque, killing worshippers. Among those killed was Malam Aliyu, the Imam of the mosque.

The attackers also reportedly blocked an escape route used by residents fleeing the community, killing several people in the process.

Amnesty said some families were still searching for relatives who had been missing since the attack.

“The recurring violence across eastern and southern parts of Sokoto State reflects a wider insecurity crisis characterised by killings, abductions and displacement,” the statement said.

It said the persistent attacks continue to undermine the fundamental human rights and safety of affected communities.

Amnesty International called on the Nigerian authorities to urgently investigate the incident and ensure that those responsible are identified and prosecuted through fair judicial proceedings.

“The authorities must take immediate steps to protect communities that remain at risk,” the organisation said, while also urging the government to provide effective remedies and support to survivors of the attack.

The organisation stressed that accountability and protection of civilians were essential to preventing further attacks and restoring the rights of communities affected by persistent insecurity.
