It is not just players who take advantage of Las Vegas Summer League as an opportunity to develop NBA skills. As prospective players fight for a shot on one of the league’s 30 teams, on the sidelines we can see assistant coaches tuning their own professional skills as well, as we once saw with a younger Joe Mazzulla.
And this year’s version of the Sin City Celtics are helmed by Boston assistant coach Amile Jefferson, who has been taking full advantage of the opportunity to hone his capabilities as a coach. “The biggest thing is my voice,” said Jefferson after the Summer Celtics beat the Las Vegas version of the Toronto Raptorsvia CLNS Media. “Getting our guys comfortable with hearing me not only teach, but lead and develop growth.”
“And then the other thing for me, for summer league, for this time in general, is to help somebody’s dream come true,” he added. “I’ve been in this position before. I know what it’s like to play summer league, to want to get a chance in the NBA.”
“This is the best job in the world,” said Jefferson. “And so to be a small part of helping these guys achieve their dream is super, super honor for me.” As for what the actual development process was from a coaching perspective, the Boston assistant said that it is “incredible and it’s because it’s all streamlined.”
“We all work in an ecosystem, and everyone is building each other up, everyone is helping each other. I tell everyone my first year here. It was like a PhD in basketball. I got to learn so much from our coaches. They’re so intelligent and creative, and so it made me start thinking about the game in a different way, and it’s made me a much better coach.”
