Alma Center Lincoln cancels football game after player's death

Alma Center Lincoln has canceled its next football game following the death of a player who was inured during their last game.

Max Preps, a high school sports website, said the Red Raiders had a Friday, Aug. 28 home game against the Cornell Chiefs.

Adam Massman, an Alma Center senior, died last week from injuries he sustained during a game. EMTs were at the game and Massman was taken to the hospital.  

Drew Semingson, the district’s superintendent, said canceling the game “isn’t reflective of any long-term plans at this time for the football season.”

“Adam was active in our Lincoln community, participating in multiple sports, clubs, and activities making friends everywhere he went,” Semingson said in a statement released over the weekend. “This loss touches our Lincoln family in many ways. Adam’s family has deep connections throughout our schools.”  

Massman loved sports, especially playing football, baseball and golf. He also showed cattle. Brianne Massman, Adam’s mother, spoke with the Journal Sentinel on Monday, Aug. 24. She said her son was a determined person.  

“What he invested in, he invested in all the way,” she said. 

There will be a visitation in the Lincoln Jr./Sr. High School gym from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28. Additional visitation is planned from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 29 in the gym with the funeral service starting at 11 a.m. Massman will be buried at East Lawn Cemetery.  

The family is requesting people come dressed as they knew Massman. That could mean wearing a sports uniform or show clothes if you showed cattle with him. It could also mean street clothes if that’s how you knew Adam, the funeral announcement said.
