Fans of The Hunger Games have been anxiously awaiting the release of the newest installment, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, and now, ahead of that theatrical debut on November 20th, audiences can catch all five films that have already been released for free on streaming. While no installment of The Hunger Games has been particularly easy to swallow, just based on the basic premise being children fighting one another to the death in a gladiator-style arena, all with the backdrop that makes it, effectively, a game show, Sunrise on the Reaping is particularly brutal.
This movie is a prequel to the original trilogy of books (which became four movies, with Mockingjay being split into two parts) but a sequel to the first prequel book/movie The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Sunrise on the Reaping specifically takes place during the 50th Annual Hunger Games, also called the Second Quarter Quell, which saw double the amount of tributes than usual—two boys and two girls from each district, totaling 48 children. The protagonist, Haymitch Abernathy, is Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark’s eventual mentor, so audiences, of course, already know that Haymitch survives.
The fact that most viewers will therefore go into the movie already knowing that Haymitch is this year’s victor doesn’t mean the violence, death, and suffering to come in the movie will be any easier to watch, though. In fact, with the context of both The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes and the original trilogy, Sunrise on the Reaping actually only becomes all the more painful to watch, and that’s precisely what makes it such perfect timing that one streaming platform is offering all five previous Hunger Games movies for free.
All 5 Hunger Games Movies Are Now Available To Stream For Free On Tubi

Tubi is known to be one of the streaming platforms that offers a variety of free shows and movies (made possible by the fact that ads are built into the streamer, and there’s no tiered payment that allows viewers to opt out). Luckily, that is precisely the platform that has decided to offer all former Hunger Games movies (The Hunger Games, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2, and The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes) ahead of the release of Sunrise on the Reaping.

Now, audiences really just have to decide in which order they’d like to watch the films, whether that’s in release order, beginning with The Hunger Games, or in chronological order, beginning with The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. In either case, viewers can’t really go wrong, and while, technically, a brand-new Hunger Games fan could come in with no knowledge of any of the previous books or movies, there are some very specific plot-related reasons why it’s absolutely better to watch these previous movies ahead of time.
Sunrise On The Reaping Makes This The Perfect Time To Revisit The Franchise

Neither the Hunger Games trilogy nor The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes are really required watches and/or reads before Sunrise on the Reaping, but going in with that context will make this experience so much better and more emotional. With Haymitch as Katniss and Peeta’s mentor, getting to see what he’s like when he’s older, especially considering that it makes the horrible effects of the Hunger Games (and what happens afterward) quite clear, will be much more powerful. Additionally, it’s already been confirmed that Katniss and Peeta are in the Sunrise on the Reaping cast, so that helps too.
Even with The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, though, that movie provides significantly more insight into President Snow, who is the overarching villain of the entire franchise, which will be valuable to understand going into Sunrise on the Reaping. Additionally, there is one character in particular who has a connection to Ballad’s protagonist, Lucy Gray Baird, which audiences would, once again, benefit from knowing in advance. Luckily, as long as viewers have the time, Tubi has just made it incredibly easy to get these movies in before The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.
