Alexis Mac Allister has admitted that he had ‘options to leave’ Liverpool in the summer and was ‘very sad’ that the club didn’t offer him a new contract.
There were rumours of interest from Manchester City and Chelsea during the off-season, and both clubs reportedly made contact regarding the player, who’s been on the same £150,000-per-week deal that he signed upon joining from Brighton in June 2023.
Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai, who both came to Anfield in that same summer, penned contract extensions with the Reds earlier this year, but no such offer was forthcoming for the Argentina international.
Mac Allister speaks out about contract ‘sadness’
Mac Allister addressed the media this afternoon ahead of Liverpool’s Champions League clash against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday night, and he told reporters about his displeasure over his contract situation.
The 27-year-old said (via Liverpool Echo): “There was a chance [to leave in the summer], as everyone knows. I received the news the club had made a decision not to offer me a new contract, which of course makes me very, very sad.
“Everybody can see I give 100% for this club every single day in training. I have good games and bad games like everyone and always I give my best. I see Dominik and Ryan renewing their contracts and that makes me happy as they deserve it, but at the same time it makes me sad as I didn’t get mine, but there is still time.

“The fans don’t need to worry as I will give 100% until the last day I am here. We will see what happens. There were options to leave this summer and right now I’m in the right club and I have the right mindset to give 100% to this club.
“Two more years (on my deal). Can it change? Maybe, I don’t know. It is going to depend on how i peform this year. It’s their right to make a decision.”
Mac Allister added: “I don’t want to say things they never said, but what I got from my agent is they weren’t in a position to renew me. It’s really sad. We won the Premier League together and went through difficult times together and I will always give my best. We will see what happens but of course it makes me sad.”

Hopefully Mac Allister can change Liverpool’s contract stance
Like most of his Liverpool teammates last season, the Argentine was largely well below his usual standards in the 2025/26 campaign, although it’s natural that he’d look at Gravenberch and Szobosozlai agreeing new deals and wondering why he was overlooked.
For him to publicly express his dismay at not being offered a contract extension hints at just how furious he must’ve been in private, and he doesn’t seem certain that he’ll remain beyond the end of his current deal in 2028.
Mac Allister is one of the best midfielders in the Premier League (maybe even in Europe) when operating at his peak level, and Andoni Iraola needs our number 10 to rediscover the performance standards from his first two years at Anfield.
The 27-year-old could look at how Cody Gakpo – who also had a disappointing 2025/26 – has come back much stronger in the early weeks of this season and make himself one of the first names on the teamsheet.
If the former Brighton star can do that, we’d expect that Liverpool would then be moving with much greater haste to tie him down for the long-term rather than risk losing him in the next couple of years.
