Based on the award-winning The Murderbot Diaries book series by Martha Wells, Apple TV’s new adaptation Murderbot debuted in May 2025 amid a packed sci-fi slate for the streaming service. Skarsgård leads the cast of the Murderbot series as the eponymous soap opera-loving, self-aware security unit robot, who gains free will after hacking its governor module but must try to pass as an unmodified unit. Ahead of its season 1 finale, Apple TV quickly renewed Murderbot for season 2, which is still awaiting an official premiere date.

However, the Apple TV sci-fi series does now have a release window revealed by a new Murderbot season 2 cast member. In an interview with ScreenRant‘s Tatiana Hullender for Wild Horse Nine, Steve Buscemi teased that Murderbot season 2 will premiere on Apple TV in summer 2027.

Though his character details are still undisclosed, Apple TV announced in August that Steve Buscemi, alongside 25 others, had joined the sophomore season’s ensemble, with filming having commenced earlier in 2026. A few months later, Buscemi has now clarified to ScreenRant that his filming has officially wrapped on Murderbot season 2, but he believes it won’t be released until next summer:

ScreenRant: I know you’re coming to the world of Murderbot for season 2. Have you already filmed for that role, and what can you tease about it?

Steve Buscemi: “Yeah, that’s already in the can, but it won’t come out until next summer, I think. But I loved working with Alexander Skarsgård and that whole cast. That is a true ensemble cast. We would be rehearsing in the green room, and then talking to Chris and Paul [Weitz], the directors, before group scenes. I loved the first season, but getting to work on the second season, I could see why the first season was so good. It’s because I can see the way that they all work!”

In addition to Buscemi, some of the new additions to Murderbot season 2’s cast include Michael Sheen, Tramell Tillman, Brendan Hunt, Blair Underwood, Nicholas Braun, Patton Oswalt, Topher Grace, Wanda Sykes, and many more. They join the established slate of actors who starred alongside Skarsgård in season 1, which includes Noma Dumezweni, Sabrina Wu, David Dastmalchian, Akshay Khanna, Tattiawna Jones, Tamara Podemski, John Cho, Clark Gregg, Jack McBrayer, and DeWanda Wise.

With a teased summer 2027 release window, Murderbot season 2 is joining another heavy sci-fi series year for Apple TV. Already due to premiere in 2027 on Apple TV are Neuromancer in January, Silo season 4 in July, and For All Mankind season 6 at a yet-to-be-announced date next year. Meanwhile, new entries of hit sci-fi shows like Severance season 3 and Pluribus season 2 are currently in production, with Foundation season 4 reportedly eyeing a 2027 release after wrapping filming this summer.

Murderbot show co-creator Paul Weitz has previously teased that season 2’s story will compact and adapt the second, third, and fourth novels from The Murderbot Diaries book series. Additionally, the sophomore outing is set to introduce more show-within-a-show soap operas for the titular character to watch in addition to Murderbot season 1’s Sanctuary Moon.

Ahead of season 2’s highly anticipated debut, Apple TV has yet to announce whether Murderbot will be renewed for season 3. If the streaming service decides to bring back Skarsgård’s SecUnit for more episodes, there won’t be a lack of source material to pull from, as Wells has already released eight books and several short stories in the series so far.
