Alan Shearer has seen more than his fair share of great goalscorers over the years, but even he was left speechless by Lionel Messi’s latest World Cup performance.
Messi netted a hat-trick in Argentina’s 3-0 win over Algeria, drawing level with Miroslav Klose as the top scorer in World Cup history.
The reaction from around the football world was immediate, and Shearer was among those left amazed by what they had just seen.
Alan Shearer reacts to Messi’s World Cup hat-trick
Alan Shearer, who was covering the game as a pundit, summed up the feeling of many with a simple post on social media.

It did not take long for fans to latch onto the message, with many struggling to find new ways to describe Messi’s brilliance after another historic display.
Shearer knows a thing or two about finding the net. He scored 260 goals in the Premier League, more than anyone else in the competition’s history.
But even he was left without words after watching Messi take centre stage once again.
Messi continues to break new ground
Messi’s treble took him to 16 World Cup goals, surpassing Ronaldo Nazario and matching Klose’s long-standing record.
He also became the first player ever to feature in six World Cups, marking the occasion with his 200th appearance for Argentina.
Despite nearing his 39th birthday, Messi has now scored 10 times in World Cups since turning 35, more than the career World Cup tallies of Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar, Thierry Henry, Rivaldo, Diego Maradona and Harry Kane.
With Argentina still only one game into their tournament, Messi now has a chance to stand alone as the World Cup’s all-time leading scorer.
