Alabama Baseball Is Headed Back to Omaha for the First Time Since 1999

For the first time in 27 years, Alabama baseball is heading back to Omaha.

The Crimson Tide punched its ticket to the Men’s College World Series on Monday afternoon, finishing off St. John’s with a 7-2 victory at Sewell-Thomas Stadium and completing a sweep of the Tuscaloosa Super Regional.

For Alabama fans, this moment has been a long time coming.

The last time the Crimson Tide reached Omaha was 1999. Since then, Alabama has experienced coaching changes, heartbreaking postseason exits, and plenty of seasons that ended just short of the program’s ultimate goal. On Monday, all of that was washed away as Rob Vaughn’s team officially secured its place among the final eight teams standing.

And fittingly, it was one swing that changed everything.

When play was suspended Sunday night because of severe weather, Alabama held a 7-2 lead thanks largely to Jason Torres’ massive grand slam in the seventh inning. The game resumed Monday afternoon, but the damage had already been done.

Torres delivered the defining moment of the Super Regional when he launched a towering grand slam to right field, turning a tense one-run game into a comfortable Alabama advantage. The senior finished 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, and four RBI in what will go down as one of the biggest performances in recent Alabama baseball history.

Before the fireworks from Torres, Alabama built an early lead with timely hitting.

Luke Vaughn got things started in the third inning with a leadoff double before Peyton Steele drove him home. Bryce Fowler followed with a double of his own, and Brady Neal added an RBI groundout to give Alabama a 2-0 lead.

After St. John’s answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning, Alabama manufactured another run in the fourth. Brennan Holt singled to put runners on the corners before Vaughn executed a perfectly placed safety squeeze bunt that pushed the Tide lead to 3-1.

The Red Storm cut the deficit to one after a solo home run in the sixth inning, but Alabama never blinked.

Instead, the Crimson Tide delivered the knockout punch in the seventh.

Steele and Fowler reached base, Neal worked a walk to load the bases, and Torres sent the Sewell-Thomas Stadium crowd into a frenzy with the grand slam that effectively sealed Alabama’s trip to Omaha.

While the offense delivered the big moments, Alabama’s pitching was equally important.

Zane Adams gave the Tide exactly what it needed in a win-or-advance game. The left-hander worked 6.1 innings, allowing just two earned runs while striking out eight batters. Matthew Heiberger took over late and was outstanding, retiring seven of the nine hitters he faced while recording the final outs that officially sent Alabama to the College World Series.

Following the victory, an emotional Rob Vaughn reflected on what the accomplishment means.

“What a day, what a year, what a season,” Vaughn said. “Twenty-seven years in the making.”

He’s right.

This season has already become one of the most memorable in program history, but Alabama isn’t finished yet.

The Crimson Tide heads to Omaha searching for the first national championship in school history.

Standing in the way first will be SEC rival Oklahoma when College World Series play begins Saturday.

For now, though, Alabama fans can celebrate a moment generations have waited to see.
