AJ Dybantsa and Darius Acuff Jr.’s eyebrow raising Summer League numbers

NBA Summer League is in full swing right now and some of the top picks in the draft are already turning heads. AJ Dybantsa, Darryn Peterson and Darius Acuff Jr. among the first round picks in action on Thursday in Las Vegas. Rookies put up some eye-popping numbers that were both good and bad.

Here’s what you should be overreacting to at this point in the offseason.

Darryn Peterson fouls too much

Darryn Peterson scored 24 points on 6-of-18 shooting in a loss to the Wizards. It was inefficient, but he has given Jazz fans much to be excited about. Assuming he can stay on the floor. Peterson was whistled for a whopping nine fouls against the Wizards. Nine. That’s so many fouls that they had to inform him how many he was allowed to commit before he had to leave the game.

AJ Dybantsa’s can’t hit a three

Dybantsa shot 33% from three as a freshman at BYU. He missed all five he attempted in his Summer League debut against the Jazz. And that’s about as bad as things got. He made 7-of-13 two-pointers and scored 27 points in 26 minutes and produced his first poster dunk.

He was so good that on ESPN this morning they were talking about how he looked like a poised veteran. Brian Windhorst thinks Dybantsa and Peterson could both average 20 points a game immediately.

Darius Acuff struggling from the field

The Kings took Acuff with the No. 7 pick in the draft. Last night against the Clippers he went 6-of-20 from the field and scored 19 points. He’s made 22 of 66 field goal attempts through three Summer League games. It’s a small sample size, but more importantly, you don’t need to tell Acuff he’s not shooting well.

After making just 1-of-9 three-pointers in his Summer League debut, he’s gone 7-of-18 from deep over the last two games which is better, but still well below the 44% he shot from three in college.

Michigan rookies officially a problem?

Johnson was the No. 9 pick in the draft. Matched up against his former Michigan teammate Yaxel Lendeborg on Thursday night Johnson had 27 points, eight rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocks. He made 12-of-17 shots. Meanwhile, Lendeborg, the No. 11 pick by the Warriors, had 21 points, 10 rebounds and six assists.

After the game Lendeborg compared Johnson to a brick wall, which is a term of endearment in sports.
