‘A big club cannot afford to have players who are unhappy’ – Laporta pushing for Alvarez deal

Barcelona president Joan Laporta claims a “big club cannot afford to have players who are unhappy” as he once again stated his intent to try and sign Julian Alvarez.

The Argentinian’s future has been one of the biggest stories of the transfer window so far, with the player claiming he wants to leave to “fulfil his dream”, though Atletico Madrid do not want to let him leave.

Real Madrid have already seen a €150m offer rejected, while Barcelona are the favourites to land Alvarez should he leave, despite Arsenal also being interested in his signature.

Laporta has made no secret of his desire to sign Alvarez, with Atletico officials saying they have no intention of letting him go to Barca.

Speaking at the World Cup, Laporta said Barcelona have an offer on the table for the striker, who has scored 49 goals in 106 games for Los Colchoneros, but that it will not be there forever.

“We’re still on the table with an offer,” Laporta said.

“He’s a player our manager wants, which is why we made the offer to Atletico Madrid. It’s a very important and very, very good offer for us.

“I respect everyone’s opinion. I respect Miguel Angel’s opinion and everyone else’s. There are so many cases where it’s been said that a player would never go to Barca, and yet he’s ended up coming.

“It is not open-ended. We will set a reasonable deadline. I would say until the end of the month.

“When a player wants to leave, Barca’s stance as a club is that, if a player wants to leave Barca, we’ll give him a golden handshake.

“A big club cannot afford to have players who are unhappy.”

Barcelona have already signed Anthony Gordon this summer, while Karim Adeyemi is reportedly closing in on a move to Camp Nou.
