9 Years Ago, Star Wars’ Biggest Waste Of A Character Finally Got Her Moment Of Glory

· · 4 min read

Star Wars‘ sequel trilogy was a hodgepodge of wasted potential due to it not committing to a single director and creative storytelling liberties challenging or upending those that came before them. Star Wars: The Force Awakens is unquestionably the one that is the least polarizing of the three, and while that’s perhaps because it is the one to have taken the least amount of risks, it’s also the one that laid the brickwork for each character to be tremendously paramount, only for the latter two movies to ignore Star Wars: The Force Awakens‘ foundations.

For instance, the character development for FN-2187/Finn peaked when he wielded Anakin/Luke Skywalker’s blue-bladed lightsaber and dueled Kylo Ren in the snowy woods on Starkiller Base, took a nosedive when he had his spine slashed by Kylo’s red-bladed crossguard lightsaber, and swiftly eroded thereafter with less significance afforded to him in each subsequent movie. Of course, Finn wasn’t the only character who deserved more and whose knees were cut out from under them, but the First Order’s right hand was fortunately given the chance to shine bright in Star Wars Battlefront II (2017).

Captain Phasma Was Done Dirty In Star Wars’ Sequel Trilogy

Nobody could blame you if you’ve forgotten who Star Wars‘ Captain Phasma is, that she was ever a part of the sequel trilogy, or what her fate was in the end. Captain Phasma had a pretty lackluster theatrical outing, appearing briefly in Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens and Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi as an antagonist who never got enough screen time to truly marinate before she was killed off. Captain Phasma was also played by Gwendoline Christie, which was a huge waste of a great actress.

Unequivocally, Captain Phasma’s best appearance is in Star Wars Battlefront II, where she’s a playable villain unit. Star Wars Battlefront II‘s ‘hero’ and ‘villain’ characters from the sequel trilogy era include:

Light Side

Dark Side

  • BB-9E
  • Captain Phasma
  • Iden Versio (‘villain’ unit and TIE/In Fighter)*
  • Kylo Ren (‘villain’ unit and TIE Silencer)

*Iden is technically only on the side of the Galactic Empire at the beginning of Star Wars Battlefront II‘s story campaign before defecting to the Rebel Alliance, but appears in ordinary PvP multiplayer modes as the black-clad Inferno Squad commander. She can also technically be considered a sequel-trilogy character due to appearing during this era in the story campaign’s single-player DLC, Resurrection, as an ally of the Resistance.

Star Wars Battlefront II Redeemed An Otherwise Cool Character

To be fair, Captain Phasma was never considered incredibly high-tier; her Staff Strikes ability is a last-resort panic maneuver at best, though her First Order Sentry Droid can do a decent job of bottlenecking a point or entryway. However, she was much more interesting in Star Wars Battlefront II gameplay, at least, and players got to experience what she might’ve been like on an actual battlefield against the Resistance, rather than only getting to see her be laughably underpowered or underutilized as a character.

Finn is also a playable hero unit in Star Wars Battlefront II, which gives Captain Phasma the rematch she desires. But, while it’s great to see more of Captain Phasma as she was, Star Wars Battlefront II‘s Finn is the same character that the movies didn’t have any idea what to do with. Finn doesn’t even wield a lightsaber in-game, which could’ve made for a neat ability.

According to Variety, per a memo to EA employees, president and chief studios officer Chris Weber and president and COO David Tinson explained that EA is “bringing together our Respawn and DICE studios to collaborate on a future project.” This all but confirms the recent rumors of Star Wars Battlefront III from DICE and Respawn, whether or not it’s actually developed as a third entry in the modern reboot of the Star Wars franchise, or a fresh reboot in and of itself, and it’ll be fun to see whether Captain Phasma makes it onto the roster.
