We continue the countdown to the start of the Arizona Cardinals‘ regular season. Today, Saturday, July 18, is 57 days away from the Arizona Cardinals’ regular-season opener on Sept. 13 on the road against the Los Angeles Chargers.
With 57 days until Week 1, let’s look back at the 1957 season for the Cardinals.
The Cardinals were one of the worst teams in the NFL in 1957. They went 3-9, starting 1-0 and 2-2 before losing six in a row.
They averaged only 16.7 points per game, 10th in the league out of 12 teams, and they gave up 24.9 points per game, the second-highest total in the league.
They had three players in the Pro Bowl:
- RB Ollie Matson
- S Lindon Crow
- LB Leo Sanford
Matson was also a first-team All-Pro.
Lamar McHan started all 12 games at quarterback. He passed for 1,568 yards, 11 touchdowns and 15 interceptions.
Matson was the team’s leading rusher with 577 yards and six touchdowns. He also had 20 receptions for 451 yards and three touchdowns, totaling 1,028 total yards and nine touchdowns.
Gern Nagler led the team with 27 receptions for 475 yards and four touchdowns.
Cornerback Jimmy Hill led the team with three defensive interceptions.
