5-star small forward Will Brunson discusses recruitment, Duke

If the last name Brunson is familiar to Duke fans, it’s because of Stan Brunson, who played for the Blue Devils in the mid-90s.

Now, it’s Stan’s son, Will, who is garnering all of the recruiting attention as he enters his junior season at IMG Academy. The 5-star small forward has scholarship offers from many powerhouses, including Kansas, Auburn and Louisville, among others. Hence, his landing in Durham isn’t exactly a shoo-in for Jon Scheyer and the Duke coaching staff.

But the Blue Devils do have an advantage when it comes to where his fandom might lie. Brunson argues that might not be the case, though.

“My dad went to Duke, so everybody in the house is always going for Duke when I was growing up, but in the past three years I just became a huge college basketball fan,” he said on the Up Next Podcast. “I turn on YouTube and look at the replays of March Madness. I’m not really a fan of nobody right now.”

Ranked the No. 5 small forward and No. 19 overall player in the 2028 class, Brunson has visited Scheyer and the Blue Devils along with NC State, Notre Dame and Oklahoma State. Where he signs is likely to depend on one thing: playing time.

“I’m looking for an opportunity to get on the floor,” Brunson said on the podcast. “But I also want a coach that believes in me and wants to put work into my development.”
