49ers starting LG battle remains unclear after change on depth chart

The shakeup in the San Francisco 49ers starting left guard job continued into Thursday with Robert Jones remaining with the top group.

Jones’s first first-team reps in camp came Wednesday when he slotted in at left guard ahead of second-year seventh-round pick Connor Colby. Offensive line coach Chris Foerster was noncommittal about the team’s plan at left guard when he spoke with reporters after Wednesday’s practice.

ESPN’s Nick Wagoner on Thursday noted in his practice recap that while Jones remained with the starting group, the starting LG job doesn’t appear to be settled.

And Pleasants got some more work at guard, too. My early read: The Niners are going to have to keep looking for the best option for LG. Not sure that person is on the roster, though the concussion for Carver Willis is unfortunate because he might have been able to force his way into the conversation.

The 49ers again went without a major investment on the interior of the offensive line, choosing instead to handle the position by way of competition between a journeyman veteran and a handful of mid-to-late round draft picks. They still have a little over a month until they need to hash out a starting O-line. However, three weeks into camp they should have at least some idea of who the favorite is to take that job. As of Thursday it doesn’t appear the 49ers have someone at the front of the race for one of the few starting spots on their offense.
