The San Francisco 49ers began their 2026 NFL season overseas against the Los Angeles Rams and won with a dominant 27-7 victory in Australia.

It was a great way to start the season for the 49ers fanbase, and the next day, the fans got some great news about the leader who was a big help in this Week 1 win.

According to Tom Pelissero of The Ringer and Netflix Sports, the 49ers quietly signed Kyle Shanahan to a long-term contract extension to remain as their head coach well beyond the 2027 season, as his previous deal indicated.

49ers quietly sign Kyle Shanahan to HC extension

“Stability in San Francisco: The 49ers quietly signed Kyle Shanahan to a contract extension in the offseason, sources tell @ringer @netflixsports,” Pelissero reports. “Shanahan was previously believed to be signed through 2027. Now, one of the NFL’s top coaches is locked up for years to come.”

This report from Pelissero is a big one. Shanahan, whose offseason was an odd one with the Brandon Aiyuk drama and the car accident, also reportedly featured a new contract extension to remain as the 49ers head coach.

While San Francisco has yet to win a Super Bowl with him as their coach, the team has routinely been one of the best in the NFL, and the offense since he’s taken over has become one that other teams around the NFL try to copy.

After the 49ers’ dominant Week 1 win against the Rams during the 2026 season, this report of a Shanahan extension should be music to 49ers fans’ ears.

This was a no-brainer decision for the 49ers, but it’s still nice to hear that San Francisco has actually signed Shanahan long-term to remain as their head coach.

While the specifics aren’t fully known, it’s fair to assume he’s locked in through at least 2028, and it would not be a surprise if he’s around well beyond that as well.
