The San Francisco 49ers kicked off their season with a commanding 27-7 victory over NFC West rival Los Angeles Rams in Australia. However, the win was quickly overshadowed by a major injury scare to rookie wide receiver De’Zhaun Stribling. After impressing during training camp as a second-round pick from Ole Miss, Stribling left the game in the first half with a lower-body injury and was ruled out for the remainder of the contest. Initially, head coach Kyle Shanahan provided an encouraging update, confirming that Stribling’s Achilles tendon was intact. However, further medical evaluations revealed a more serious injury that necessitated an immediate roster adjustment.

To address the sudden loss of a wide receiver, the 49ers promoted KhaDarel Hodge to the active roster. Hodge had previously served on the practice squad and recorded two tackles in Australia. Shortly thereafter, the seriousness of Stribling’s injury was confirmed. According to Adam Schefter, sources said Stribling is being placed on injured reserve with an ankle injury, which will keep him sidelined for at least four games. Jeremy Fowler later reported that Stribling is dealing with a deltoid ankle sprain, which will require at least a month for recovery, as he seeks additional medical opinions regarding potential surgery.

While the loss of the promising rookie diminishes the excitement of an otherwise stellar opening performance, San Francisco has plenty of veteran depth to weather this challenge. Deebo Samuel Sr., Mike Evans, and Demarcus Robinson are all set to take on expanded roles in the passing game, working alongside quarterback Brock Purdy as the team prepares to face the Miami Dolphins in Week 2.
