49ers coordinator tabbed as candidate to become a head coach in 2027
The San Francisco 49ers brought in a new defensive coordinator this offseason, but their other two coordinators are returning for another season with the team in Santa Clara, California.
Among San Francisco‘s three coordinators is Klay Kubiak, who Bleacher Report recently identified as a candidate for a head coach job during next year’s hiring cycle.
Kubiak, 37, is the son of long-time NFL coach Gary Kubiak and the brother of Las Vegas Raiders head coach Klint Kubiak. He began his coaching career in 2013 at Strake Jesuit College Prep in 2013, where he served as offsneive coordinator until 2018 when he took over as head coach.
In 2021, Kubiak joined Kyle Shanahan’s staff as defensive quality control coach. He was named assistant quarterback coach in 2022, offensive passing game specialist in 2024 and offensive coordinator in 2025.
With head coaching in his DNA and his connection to Shanahan, it wouldn’t be shocking to see Kubiak land a job next year, especially after he received multiple interview this offseason before eventually withdrawing his name for consideration.
