47 days till Arizona Cardinals' opener: Remembering the 1947 season

We continue the countdown to the start of the Arizona Cardinals‘ regular season. Today, Tuesday, July 28, is 47 days away from the Arizona Cardinals’ regular-season opener on Sept. 13 on the road against the Los Angeles Chargers.

With 47 days until Week 1, let’s look back at the 1947 season for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals have never won a Super Bowl, but they won the NFL Championship in 1947. They went 9-3 in the regular season and then beat the Philadelphia Eagles 28-21 in the championship game.

Running back Elmer Angsman had two 70-yard touchdown runs, running back Charley Trippi had a 44-yard touchdown run and a 75-yard punt return for a touchdown. Paul Christman only completed three passes in 14 attempts and was picked off twice, but the Cardinals rushed for 282 yards to be crowned champions.

Receiver Mal Kutner and guard Buster Ramsey were both second-team All-Pros in 1947.

Christman led the Cardinals with 2,191 passing yards, 17 touchdown passes and 22 interceptions.

Angsman’s 412 rushing yards and seven touchdown runs, while Trippi, a rookie in 1947, rushed for 401 yards and two scores, and he had 23 catches for 240 yards.

Pat Harder rushed for 371 yards and seven scores.

Kutner had 43 receptions and led the NFL with 943 yards. He scored seven times.

Red Cochran’s eight defensive interceptions led the team.

Harder made a league-high seven field goals.
