34 prison inmates write First School Leaving Certificate exam in Umuahia

Abia State Government has conducted 2026 First School Leaving Certificate examination for 34 inmates in Umuahia and Aba Correctional centres in the State.

Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, disclosed this on Tuesday, while briefing journalists on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.

Kanu said the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, through the Abia State Agency for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-Formal Education, successfully facilitated the participation of adult learners in the 2026 First School Leaving Certificate assessment test.

Kanu emphasised that the initiative was part of the state government’s determination to make education accessible to every citizen, regardless of circumstances.

“This year, 15 inmates from the Umuahia Correctional Centre and 19 inmates from the Aba Correctional Centre participated in the examination, bringing the total number of participating inmates to 34”, Kanu said.

He further said that Governor Alex Otti has directed the immediate deployment of intervention and mitigation measures to the Amamba-Uzuakoli and Ipupe-Ubakala gully erosion sites.
