31 days till Arizona Cardinals' opener: Remembering the 1931 season

We continue the countdown to the start of the Arizona Cardinals‘ regular season. Today, Thursday, August 13, is 31 days away from the Arizona Cardinals’ regular-season opener on Sept. 13 on the road against the Los Angeles Chargers.

With 31 days until Week 1, let’s look back at the 1931 season for the Cardinals.

In 1931, the Cardinals started the season losing three games in a row. They rebounded by winning the next four games in a row and finished the season 5-4.

They had the league’s No. 1 offense in yards and scored the second-most points in the league, averaging 13.3 per game.

They had the league’s No. 1 defense in yards, but they were dead last in points allowed (14.2 ppg).

Fullback Ernie Nevers was one of three Cardinals All-Pros. He made the first team. Rookie center Frank McNally was also on the first team, while left guard Walk Kiesling made the second team.

Nevers scored eight rushing touchdowns, made 15 extra points and made the team’s only field goal of the year. He also threw six touchdown passes.
