22-goal star responds to transfer speculation following late Arsenal interest this summer

Inter Milan forward Lautaro Martinez has responded to recent transfer speculation by insisting he’s happy to stay at his current club.

The Argentina international has spent the majority of his career at Inter since joining all the way back in 2018, going on to score 175 goals in 378 appearances for the Nerazzuri.

Still, it seems there was some uncertainty over his future this summer, with the Daily Mail recently reporting that Arsenal coach Gabriel Heinze reached out to his fellow countryman about a move.

Martinez seemingly also attracted some links with Barcelona, which he was asked about by Sky Sport Italia at an awards ceremony.

“Barcelona’s interest? An honour for me, but in my head everything is already clear. Right now my life is in Milan, I chose to stay at Inter because I feel good here and I want to stay and do even better,” Martinez said.

The 29-year-old could surely have been a good option for a number of top clubs this summer after a great career in Serie A.

Barcelona ended up signing Gabriel Jesus from Arsenal instead, while the Gunners ultimately had a quiet end to the window without making changes to their attack.

We’ll have to wait and see if they live to regret that, but perhaps they’ll look at the situation again in January, which might prove a better strategy than a late-summer panic buy for someone like Martinez.

As good a player as he is, he’s never tested himself in the Premier League and is not getting any younger, so there would certainly be some risk associated with this potential deal.

Martinez would have needed to settle quickly, and if he’d struggled, he’d likely have little re-sale value due to his age.

Inter fans will surely be relieved to see that he seems committed to their club anyway.
