The Nigeria Police Force has warned politicians, political supporters and suspected thugs against the destruction, defacement or unlawful removal of campaign posters, banners and billboards belonging to rival candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The police said incidents of deliberate damage to campaign materials were becoming a growing concern across the country, describing the practice as an act of political intolerance capable of undermining peaceful political participation.

In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, the police condemned the activities of political thugs, hoodlums and other individuals involved in destroying campaign materials, urging them to desist immediately.

The Force stressed that political disagreements or allegiance to a particular party do not give anyone the right to damage another candidate’s property or prevent opponents from exercising their democratic rights.

It explained that the destruction, defacement or unlawful removal of campaign materials could amount to malicious damage, a criminal offence punishable under applicable laws.

The police specifically referenced Section 451 of the Criminal Code Act and Section 326 of the Penal Code Law, which provide for offences relating to malicious damage and mischief.

According to the statement, all political parties and candidates, regardless of their political affiliations or status, are entitled to equal protection under the law.

The Force maintained that no individual or group has the authority to decide which candidate’s campaign materials should be displayed or removed through unlawful means.

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has consequently directed Commissioners of Police across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to take proactive steps to prevent further incidents.

The IGP also ordered the police commissioners to investigate reported cases and ensure that anyone found responsible is arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The police further warned that political sponsors and individuals who recruit, encourage or provide support for those involved in destroying campaign materials would also face accountability if evidence establishes their involvement.

The Force urged political parties, candidates and their supporters to embrace peaceful campaigns and respect the rights of political opponents as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum.

It warned that political intolerance, intimidation and other criminal activities would not be allowed to threaten the country’s democratic process.

Reaffirming its determination to maintain law and order, the police declared that political thugs and troublemakers would not be allowed to turn the nation’s political environment into a theatre of lawlessness.

The statement concluded with a warning that anyone who violates the law would face the full consequences of their actions.
