2026 Ballon d’Or: Michael Owen agrees with Kylian Mbappe on who should win award

Former England striker, Michael Owen has said that Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappe is in a good position to win the Ballon d’Or this year.

He acknowledged, however, that the Frenchman’s lack of trophies to complement his excellent performances for club and country may work against him.

In an interview with Get French Football News, Owen agreed with Mbappe’s claim that he deserves to win the Ballon d’Or this year, affirming that the Real Madrid forward has demonstrated sufficient merit to claim the France Football accolade.

Owen said, “I absolutely think he has a big chance to win it. When you top the scoring charts in La Liga and also in a World Cup, you have to be seriously considered for this award.

“However, ultimately, not winning a major title in a World Cup year, plus neither La Liga nor the Champions League, may count against him.

“However, he has significant accomplishments that position him as a formidable contender for this prestigious award.”

Owen reflected on his own Ballon d’Or achievement in 2001, noting that he did not actively solicit votes. He contended that contemporary social media engagement has fundamentally altered the landscape and stated:

Real Madrid’s star forward Kylian Mbappe and Barcelona’s emerging talent Lamine Yamal are currently among the frontrunners in the Ballon d’Or race.
