Two college football players have been killed after their SUV struck a guardrail on a Texas highway, police have confirmed.
Texas Lutheran University students A’Jean Augustine, 20, and Deyreck Dean, 23, were traveling south on State Highway 46 “at a high rate of speed” in the early hours of the morning on Monday, Nov. 2, when the driver lost control, the Seguin Police Department told the San Antonio Express-News.
At around 2:38 a.m. local time, the vehicle crossed into the northbound lanes and hit a guardrail, per the newspaper.
Both the driver and passenger were pronounced dead at the scene, ABC affiliate KSAT reported. It was not immediately made clear who was driving the vehicle.
According to a Seguin Police Department Facebook post, both northbound and southbound lanes were closed as first responders cleared the scene, before reopening a few hours later.
Later on Monday, Texas Lutheran University confirmed the deaths of Augustine and Dean, who both played for the TLU Bulldogs.
“Junior A’Jean (AJ) Augustine of Houston and senior Deyreck Dean of Rockwall, both student athletes, were beloved members of our community and we will long feel the impact of their loss,” the university said, according to the San Antonio Express-News.
According to the TLU Bulldogs’ website, Augustine, who graduated from Lamar High School in Houston, was in his third year as a placekicker and was majoring in kinesiology.
“A’Jean was full of life, laughter, smiles and always [a] mama’s boy,” a woman who said she was a family friend wrote in a Facebook tribute. “Loved to play sports. He played soccer since the age [of] 3, then he moved on to football.”
Dean, who graduated from Rockwall High School in Rockwall, Texas, played linebacker for four years, from 2022 to 2025, and majored in business management, per the team’s website.
Dean was set to graduate in December, according to a Facebook post from Lucinda Purnell, who said he lived with her family through high school.
“We are heartbroken. His smile was contagious, big and beautiful. He was as forgetful as they come, but had a heart of gold,” she wrote. “My kids lost a brother and no one can prepare them for this type of grief … You will always be part of our family. I love you.”
