As the race for next year’s Academy Awards gains momentum, there’s one film that is the favorite to sweep up. Christopher Nolan‘s historical epic The Odyssey, which stars Matt Damon as the King of Ithaca, is likely to take home several Golden Statues come the 99th Oscars ceremony. But many are even predicting it will make Academy Awards history by earning the most nominations ever. This very record was only broken earlier this year, as Ryan Coogler‘s beloved vampire flick Sinners earned an eye-watering 16 nominations.
Of its 16 nominations, Sinners took home four trophies, including the awards for Best Original Screenplay, Best Cinematography, and Best Original Score. But its most notable win came in the Best Actor category, as Michael B. Jordan somewhat surprised cinephiles by beating Timothée Chalamet to the prize. There’s no doubt that Jordan deserved the win, with his dual performance as both of the Smokestack Twins his best yet. But all of Jordan’s best work has come under the directorial eye of Coogler, with their first collaboration being the film that put both men on the map.
After debuting at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival to widespread critical acclaim, earning the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award in the process, the brilliant drama Fruitvale Station caught the attention of Hollywood, with Coogler and Jordan being fast-tracked to the top. In Collider’s review at the time, Matt Goldberg awarded a “B+” score, one of countless gushing responses to the film. If you’re a fan of either star but have yet to see their most important and influential movie, you’re in luck, as Fruitvale Station will be available to stream for free on Plex, starting November 1.
