Zelda: Ocarina Of Time Remake Shows Off Horrifying Redead Redesign

· · 3 min read

Another character redesign from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake has apparently leaked ahead of the game’s release later this week. The Ocarina of Time remake, set for launch on November 5, is expected to become one of the year’s biggest releases.

Perhaps because of its Switch 2 exclusivity and its pedigree as a remake of what’s often considered one of the greatest games of all time, it’s one of very few November releases brave enough to challenge the sales behemoth of GTA 6 directly.

As these things so often go, a few fans claim to have gotten their hands on the OOT remake a bit early. Some of them have begun sharing screenshots of various areas around Hyrule online early. This time, we have a look at the remake’s version of the Redead, the zombie-like enemies who haunt the Royal Family’s Tomb and other desolate locations in Ocarina of Time.

Reddit user pkjoan posted a screenshot of a Redead in the Ocarina of Time remake, seemingly in the Royal Family’s Tomb area, based on the pools of poison slime surrounding it. With OOT‘s new art style, a few changes are immediately evident: originally gaunt, with visible rib cages and mysterious wooden masks, the remake’s increased detail has given us a lot more to be scared of.

For one thing, the Redead’s originally exposed chest seems to be covered by something here: either the scraps of dessicated bandages, as if to suggest they were mummified, or jagged and broken bones. They also seem to be coated in a layer of slime for the additional gross-out factor.

The Redead pictured here has its head cocked to the side and its mouth open, appearing to be in the midst of screaming at Link. Borrowing from later takes on the same enemies in Zelda games like The Wind Waker, its eyes are glowing red, too.

The original Ocarina‘s Redeads are generally recognized among the most terrifying enemies in the series’ history. Between the jarring camera cuts when they show up, their horrifying screams, and their ability to freeze Link in place, they’ve given players pause for nearly thirty years.

Over on Reddit, modern players are just as terrified of the rehashed Redeads, with multiple commenters comparing them visually to Resident Evil zombies. Another commented, “New generation about to be haunted by this.” Others were glad to see that Nintendo didn’t “turn down the horror” in an effort to sanitize the remake.

Some fans were critical of the decision to make the Redead’s eyes glow. “I just liked their eyes being dead empty holes,” read one comment. Another agreed: “The scary part of them was the emptyness, just standing there and when a prey gets close enough scream to stun.”

While criticisms of the remake’s art style in general abound, others are glad to see horror’s not in short supply. We’ll have to wait and see how the Redeads’ presence plays out in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake to make a final judgment call.
