YouTube Gold: Duke vs. St. John’s In The 1992 Elite Eight
In the 1990-1991 season, Duke was coming off an awful beating at the hands of UNLV in the 1990 NCAA championship game.
Things were different, though. Duke had added Grant Hill, who would become the missing piece to a truly great team.
The Blue Devils rolled by Louisiana-Monroe, 102-73, Iowa, 85-70, UConn, 81-67, before running into St. John’s in the Elite Eight.
St. John’s had just taken apart seed Ohio State 91-74 in the Sweet Sixteen and appeared to be on a roll.
However, Duke was on a roll of its own and forced five early turnovers before taking a 40-27 lead into halftime.
Bobby Hurley finished with 20 points and 7 rebounds, as Duke coasted to a 17-point win. Christian Laettner had 19 points, while Hill finished with 12.
St. John’s really did get picked apart. Guard Chucky Sproling described Duke’s defense as a “buzzsaw,” and no wonder: the Blue Devils forced 26 turnovers.
