Yobe Assembly repeals state revenue codification law

The Yobe State House of Assembly has given accelerated consideration to a bill seeking to repeal the State Revenue Codification Law and re-enact the Tax Administration Law.

The bill, presented by the executive arm of government, scaled its second reading on the floor of the house after extensive deliberations by members.

Leading the debate, the House Leader, Hon. Nasiru Hassan Yusuf, said, “the re- enactment of the Tax Administration Law would enable the government to establish a modern, comprehensive, and efficient legal framework for the administration, assessment, and collection of taxes”.

The House Leader explained that the proposed law would also introduce modern mechanisms, including electronic taxpayer registration, digital tax assessment, online payment systems, and electronic record-keeping.

According to him, the measures are designed to eliminate multiple taxation, improve efficiency, and block revenue leakages.

Hon. Nasiru Hassan further stated that the proposed tax administration system aligns with the Federal Government’s agenda of enhancing revenue generation to finance critical sectors such as education, healthcare, agriculture, infrastructure, water supply, and security.

Supporting the bill, members representing Damaturu II, Mamudo, Bade West constituencies Hon. Buba Ibrahim Kalallawa, Hon. Mohammed Isa Bello, and Hon. Sanda Kara Bade described the Bill as apt and timely.

Presiding over the sitting, the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Chiroma Buba Mashio, referred the bill to the House Standing Committee on Finance and Appropriation for further legislative action.

In another development, the House has adopted the report of the Joint Standing Committees on Health and that of Yobe State Drugs and Medical Consumables Management Agency, (YODMA), and Yobe State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency, (YSCHMA) on a bill seeking for the establishment of Yobe State Agency for Drug Abuse Control and Rehabilitation.
