The New York Yankeesrotation had some question marks heading into the season as Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodón started the year on the injured list. The Yankees have since gotten Cole back, and he has looked very good.

Rather than making a trade while their ace was sidelined, the Yankees put their faith in their young arms. That decision has paid major dividends.

“While veteran left-hander Max Fried — who led the Majors with 19 wins last season — assumed his familiar perch atop the rotation, the Yankees’ depth made it possible to sidestep the crisis without a second thought. One month into the season, the starting staff was the best in the Major Leagues, even with Cole and Rodón still working through their rehab assignments. Thanks to Cam Schlittler, Will Warren and Ryan Weathers, it was as if the problem never existed,” MLB.com’s Bob Klapisch wrote.

Even with New York getting major production from its pitching staff, the Yankees are still expected to pursue Tarik Skubal.

“Now that it’s becoming inevitable that the free-falling Detroit Tigers may have no choice but to trade two-time Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal at the deadline, rival executives believe the bidding will come down to four finalists that not only can afford the remainder of his $32 million contract, but will also be willing to give up prized prospects: The Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays and San Diego Padres,” USA Today’s Bob Nightengale wrote.

A trade for Skubal would make the Yankees’ rotation arguably the best part of the team. It could also position New York as the favorite in the American League.

“Still, if they land Skubal in a trade with the Detroit Tigers, they could have a very scary rotation and put themselves in position to overtake the Tampa Bay Rays at the top of the AL East. The rotation already has Gerrit Cole and Cam Schlittler, and Max Fried could be back by then. That would leave the Yankees with four frontline starters and a great chance to potentially emerge as the pennant winners in the American League,” SI’s Curt Bishop wrote.

Skubal is undoubtedly the top pitcher who could be available at this year’s trade deadline if the Tigers decide to move him. The Yankees also have plenty of young talent they could send to Detroit if the opportunity arises.

New York’s rotation has been one of its biggest strengths this season, and adding Skubal would make it even more formidable. Such a move would solidify the Yankees as the team to beat in the AL East and could make them the favorites in the American League as a whole.
