Yankees’ perfect trade offer for Dodgers’ Teoscar Hernandez

The New York Yankees do not need to chase every available bat. They do need to ask whether their offense is too dependent on left-handed hitters after being swept by Tampa Bay Rays in the ALDS.
Teoscar Hernandez could answer part of that question. The Dodgers may move him this winter, and one speculative trade proposal has already connected him to New York as a right-handed complement to Aaron Judge and Cody Bellinger.
The key is price. The Yankees should be willing to pay for impact, but not so much that they overvalue a veteran entering the final guaranteed season of his deal.

Why Hernandez fits the Yankees
The strongest argument for Hernández is lineup balance. He has hit 233 career home runs, owns a 118 OPS+ across 1,224 games and previously spent six seasons in Toronto, giving him familiarity with the American League East.
He also represents a fix for a very specific weakness. A lineup with several left-handed hitters can become easier to manage late in games, especially in a postseason series against specialized bullpens. A right-handed threat forces opponents to make harder decisions.
The risks are obvious. Hernández is entering the final year of a three-year, $66 million contract, his offense has declined in recent seasons and he is not considered a good defender.
His 2026 numbers were useful but unspectacular: .267/.334/.425 with 16 home runs. That output improves a lineup, but it does not make him a guaranteed middle-of-the-order solution.
Positional flexibility matters, too. One proposed alignment would move Bellinger to center field, but that choice would sacrifice defense for offense. The Yankees should be comfortable with that trade-off before committing assets.
The perfect Yankees trade offer
New York should present Los Angeles with a package built around pitching and infield upside:
Yankees receive:
- OF Teoscar Hernández.
Dodgers receive:
- RHP Ben Hess
- SS Core Jackson
Hess is the more established name. The 24-year-old right-hander is listed as the Yankees’ fifth-ranked prospect, stands 6-foot-5 and is projected to reach the majors in 2027.
His 2026 season was less encouraging. He finished with a 4.45 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 65 strikeouts against 30 walks in 56⅔ innings across 16 starts before landing on the 60-day injured list. That injury history is important context, even if his raw talent remains appealing.
Jackson would give the Dodgers a second path to value. The 23-year-old posted a .262/.360/.459 line with 14 home runs, 62 RBIs and 41 stolen bases across two minor-league levels.
The package would give Los Angeles one pitcher who could help soon and one infielder who combines contact skills with speed. It also lets the Yankees avoid surrendering their most valuable position-player prospects. The Dodgers have an ample supply of young talent, so the return should offer upside without making the cost prohibitive.
Why the Yankees should stay disciplined
The biggest issue is cost.
Yankees’ perfect trade offer for Dodgers’
Hess and Jackson are both meaningful prospects, and Hernandez is only a one-year commitment before a club option. Paying heavily for a player the Dodgers appear unlikely to retain would be a questionable use of organizational capital.
Financial structure could soften that concern. Los Angeles may need to absorb part of the contract, which would improve the Yankees’ side of the equation without changing the prospect return.
For New York, this should be a calculated move rather than an emotional response to an October exit. Hernandez would help most as a right-handed bat who raises the lineup’s floor, not as proof that the Yankees have fixed everything.
If the Dodgers insist on more than Hess and Jackson, the Yankees should be prepared to walk away. If they accept, New York gets a useful bat without emptying the farm.
