Yankees Land Big Power Bat In Blockbuster Trade With Nationals
The New York Yankees have been without Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton for a while due to injuries, but they finally replaced that gaping hole in their lineup by acquiring Luis Garcia Jr. from the Washington Nationals on Sunday.
Garcia is enjoying his best season yet at age 26, batting .283/.313/.560 and leading the National League in slugging percentage. He’s also already set career highs with 23 home runs and 76 RBI.
If he stays healthy, the left-handed slugger should be able to reach 30 homers and 100 RBI this year, especially now that he calls Yankee Stadium home. He’s also under team control through next year, so he isn’t a rental.
The Yankees paid a steep price for Garcia, however, sending right-handed pitchers Yovanny Cruz, Jake Bird, Jack Cebert, and Ben Grable to the Nationals.
Washington has one of the best offenses and worst pitching staffs in baseball this year, making this a sensible trade for the Nationals. It also makes sense for New York, which desperately needed another slugger in its lineup to give Ben Rice some help.
