Among all of the talk about what the New York Yankees are going to look like over the next few years, one situation that isn’t really being talked about enough is what the future of Jazz Chisholm Jr. looks like in the Bronx. 

Chisholm, undoubtedly one of the better players on the Yankees, despite a slow start to the campaign, should find himself in a rather decent position to get paid this winter. As of right now, it doesn’t seem like that’s going to be from the Yankees.

The Yankees will likely extend him a qualifying offer, though he’s expected to deny that. 

We haven’t seen many players take QOs in the past, though Chisholm taking one doesn’t really make much sense unless teams aren’t willing to give him a long-term deal in free agency, and that isn’t going to be the case. However, according to MLB Trade Rumors, that qualifying offer could have an impact on him.

“If Jazz is back to being Jazz, his poor April probably won’t matter much. He’s a clear candidate to receive and reject a qualifying offer in that scenario, and the associated draft pick cost might cause some teams to shy away. The market generally doesn’t pay second basemen, but Chisholm would likely be valued based on his overall offensive prowess rather than his defensive home.

“That he can at least claim the ability to play on the left side of the infield or in the outfield helps his cause, even if he’s clearly best-suited for work at second base,” MLB Trade Rumors wrote.

I think the bigger problem here, as MLB Trade Rumors spoke about, is Chisholm potentially being looked at as anything other than a second baseman. Historically, second basemen don’t get paid very well on the market, but Chisholm might be a bit different due to what he does on the offensive side of things, and that’s compete with the best of them as a guy up the middle.
