Xander Schauffele says what’s ‘awesome’ about Donald Trump ahead of his potential Presidents Cup appearance

United States President Donald Trump is expected to attend the Presidents Cup at Medinah Country Club this weekend. Trump has become a regular presence at major golf events, having attended the 2025 Ryder Cup and the Irish Open two weeks ago.

The 80-year-old is about as divisive a figure as anyone in the world, and many will disagree with him overshadowing the Presidents Cup. However, Xander Schauffele has shared a positive outlook on the president taking the time to support the US players.

Xander Schauffele thinks it is “awesome” that Donald Trump loves golf and wants to attend the Presidents Cup as a fan this week. He joked about the high level of security involved in allowing the president to attend the event, but welcomed his support for the US team at Medinah.

“Yeah. He made a guest appearance at Bethpage as well,” Schauffele said. “I’m sure Secret Service wasn’t pumped that he made an early announcement on where he’s going to be (laughter). But they’ll do a nice job of keeping him safe. But, yeah, it’s awesome that our president loves golf and supports the USA.”

Schauffele insisted that Trump’s attendance should not be a political matter. He believes the event can be a prime example of sport uniting the country regardless of political views.

“Yeah. It’s nice for sports to bring people together,” added the two-time major champion. “I think ultimately that’s what it did originally, and even where teams… there are a lot of rivalries out there. But if players and people can kind of gather under one flag in a sport, it is pretty awesome, and luckily we’re able to do that in golf.”

Trump will hope to see the United States put on a better performance than when he watched the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black in 2025. This time, Brandt Snedeker’s team are heavy favourites and should give him plenty to cheer about.
