X-Men Hero’s New Costume Modernizes A 45-Year-Old Design

· · 4 min read

Marvel finally designs the perfect modern take on one X-Men hero’s most iconic costume. Despite being so perfectly designed from the beginning, the X-Men have received several inspired redesigns throughout the decades. Storm’s punk-rock overhaul in the 1980s was a bold leap of faith, but it succeeded in giving Ororo Munroe an aggressive edge. Decades later, the Krakoan renaissance delivered a massive wave of brilliant updates, most notably seen in Magneto’s majestic all-white sovereign uniform. Likewise, Cyclops received a fresh upgrade during the Astonishing X-Men run, where his blue suit and streamlined ruby-quartz visor perfectly conveyed his transformation into an authoritative field general.

A select group of X-Men heroes and villains have such highly specific designs that they’re notoriously difficult to adapt or modernize. In grounded and realistic alternate universes and live-action movies, there are few alternatives to depicting Juggernaut as a muscular giant with a rather goofy dome-shaped helmet and exaggerated proportions. Similarly, Mojo’s grotesque appearance loses its bite if his visceral nastiness is toned down. Wolverine himself took twenty-four years to don his yellow-and-blue suit and mask on the big screen, and Cyclops finally gets his comic-accurate uniform in Avengers: Doomsday.

Yet, nothing is impossible for Marvel when it comes to visual design. Even the characters with the most eccentric costumes can be updated.

Marvel Unveils A Gorgeous New Version Of Dazzler’s Classic Costume

The Uncanny X-Men ; Written By Gail Simone; Art By Luciano Vecchio & Matthew Wilson

The Uncanny X-Men are still reeling from the Greymalkin Prison crisis while Sarah Gaunt tries to mirror Professor X as the leader of the Wolverine-like Scavengers. While Gambit and Wolverine are busy facing their own personal matters, Rogue, Monet, and Dazzler fight a terrifying multi-limbed Sentinel that attacks their former school. When the female mutant trio join forces to defeat the robot, Dazzler debuts her new chrome costume, which pays homage to her iconic disco-inspired 1970s suit, with a hard vest and a pair of blue butterfly-shaped sunglasses that serve as a nod to her emblematic make-up.

Luciano Vecchio unveiled Alison Blaire’s new costume in a cover variant for Dazzler , but The Uncanny X-Men marks the first time she wears it in a major X-Men battle.

Dazzler’s new suit is also a combination of her two most famous costumes. It’s a clear modernization of her sparkly, all-white disco attire, but it also draws inspiration from her 1990s blue jumpsuit, with a tight-fitting design, a large star emblem on her chest, and a single band on her left calf. Dazzler’s vest is a genius addition, as it replaces the flared collar with a modern accessory and combines it with Alison’s 1990s short jacket. Ultimately, Dazzler’s new costume is the perfect modernization of her classic look, as it still looks like something a pop star would wear in a concert, but without it feeling like a 1970s relic.

Dazzler’s Original Look Is Secretly The Trickiest X-Men Design To Update

It’s Easy For Dazzler To Lose Her Essence When Her Costume Is Modernized

Dazzler has worn a wide variety of costumes and outfits throughout the years, including 1990s grimdark armor and much more subdued takes on her classic shiny white outfit. However, removing the disco inspirations from her modern redesigns takes away a big part of her visual essence. Alison Blaire is first and foremost a musician with disco roots, so ignoring her fashion style’s glitzy and groovy details would be like removing Captain America’s patriotic imagery or Scarlet Witch and Doctor Strange’s mystical attire. It would work temporarily, but they would inevitably have to go back to their origins.

That’s the challenge with Dazzler’s design. With disco music and fashion already dying by the time Alison Blaire made her Marvel Comics debut in 1981’s Dazzler #1, every new interpretation needs to put a fresh but still familiar spin on her design. Too modern and she loses her original style; too retro and she sticks out awkwardly. Fortunately, artists like Luciano Vecchio understand how important the white or silver suit, flared collar, disco-ball patterns, and voluminous hair are for Dazzler.

The Uncanny X-Men is now available from Marvel Comics
