World Cup: ‘It doesn’t make sense’ – Ian Wright slams Canada coach

· · 1 min read

Former England striker, Ian Wright, has criticized Canada coach, Jesse Marsch following his team’s 2-1 loss to Switzerland at the 2026 tournament.

Before the match played at BC Place in Vancouver, Canada was leading the Group A standings and a draw would have been enough for them to secure their place in the knockout stage as group leaders.

Regrettably for Les Rouges, Promise David’s goal in the 76th minute was merely a consolation, as Ruben Vargas (46′) and Johan Manzambi (57′) had already put Switzerland ahead with two goals.

Although both teams advanced to the knockout round thanks to Bosnia and Herzegovina’s 3-1 victory over Qatar, the Swiss gained an additional advantage with their win.

Their Round of 32 match will take place in Vancouver, allowing them to avoid travel and ensuring ample rest before the game. In contrast, Canada will forfeit their home advantage and must travel to Los Angeles for their initial knockout phase match.

Speaking after the match, Wright expressed his disapproval of Marsch’s cautious and indecisive tactics.

He told ITV broadcast, “It doesn’t make sense to have the chance to win a match and remain in your own country, where you will benefit from the support of the fans, yet still discuss how much he believes in the spirit of this team.

“He should have demonstrated that belief from the outset of the game today, allowing them to stay here and enhance their chances.”

“At times, he comes across as somewhat performative to me. I do not wish to be harsh, but it seems he is merely saying the right things for the sake of appearances,” Wright concluded.
