Women’s Super League Predictions: Man City aiming for another statement in title defence

Manchester City have made a statement start to their Women’s Super League title defence with a perfect two wins from two, but Chelsea got their first victory of 2026-27 with a thumping win last time out.

They thrashed Manchester United 5-0 away from home, taking them into second, and leaving Eva Olid’s team propping up the table.

And things do not get any easier for United this weekend with another headline fixture, this time against Arsenal, who are also unbeaten in their opening two matches.

City are looking to continue their form against Liverpool, while Chelsea host Birmingham City, who are still seeking their first win since promotion.

But who will come out on top in the WSL this weekend? We have a look at the Opta supercomputer’s predictions.

City have beaten Birmingham City and Aston Villa so far this season – in WSL history, the only seasons in which only a sole side have won their first two games are 2015 (Chelsea) and 2012 (Arsenal).

They are heavily backed to continue their 100% start on Friday, with a 79.6% win probability, given they have won nine of their 10 WSL home games against Liverpool (D1) and have won each of the last seven in a row.

In fact, City are generally hard to beat at home, winning each of their last 13 WSL home games. They could equal the second-longest winning streak on home turf in the competition, set by Chelsea between September 2019 and January 2021 (14).

Liverpool, who are given a 7.9% chance of victory and a further 12.5% of getting a draw, have won four points from two games in 2026-27, a tally they did not reach until MD12 last season. 

Only once in their previous seven top-flight seasons have they gone unbeaten across their first three matches (2024-25), but they have lost nine of their last 10 away matches in the WSL against the reigning champions.

CHARLTON ATHLETIC V LONDON CITY LIONESSES

London City Lionesses were brought back down to earth last weekend; having earned a first-ever win over Man Utd to open the campaign, they lost to West Ham.

Charlton, meanwhile, are looking for their first-ever WSL point, having lost to Liverpool and Everton so far, and they are aiming to avoid becoming the fifth team to lose each of their first three games in the WSL after Yeovil Town, Brighton, Aston Villa and Leicester City.

London City are the team that have recorded the most league wins against Karen Hills’ Charlton, winning five of nine matches in WSL2 (D2 L2), and they are expected to get another in the top-flight, with a 45% win probability – the most of any away side on MD3.

Charlton, who are yet to have a shot on target since their promotion, come out on top in 30.1% of the supercomputer’s simulations, while they get a draw in the other 24.9%.

Sonia Bompastor is preparing for the landmark 200th game of her managerial career, and she has won 14 of her previous meetings with newly promoted sides (D2).

She looks set to mark this victory with a win, too, as Chelsea are the most likely winners of MD3 with an 84.4% win probability. They are also unbeaten in their last 10 WSL games (W8 D2), with only Arsenal (19) currently on a longer such run.

Chelsea have won each of their last eight meetings with Birmingham across all competitions, but they have not met since the latter were last relegated in 2022.

Having lost their first match back in the top-flight 3-1 to Man City, Birmingham did get a point on the board against Brighton last time out (2-2).

Birmingham won five of their first seven meetings with Chelsea in the competition (D2) but have won just one of 16 since (D2 L13) and only have a 5.7% chance of getting another victory.

After a summer of upheaval, Manchester United are struggling for form in 2026-27, having lost their opening two league games for the first time since their debut WSL campaign in 2019-20.

They have also shipped a league-high seven goals, never previously conceding more than three times across their first two matches of a top-flight season.

And things do not get any easier against Arsenal, who are unbeaten in each of their last six WSL meetings with United (W2 D4), though the pair drew both matchups last term 0-0.

But the Gunners have not been prolific so far this season, scoring once from 43 shots in the WSL, underperforming their xG (3.9) by the biggest tally (-2.9).

Arsenal have not drawn a blank in back-to-back league games since October 2023 (three straight), and are not expected to do so at the Emirates, with a 62.6% chance of victory.

United are only given a 17.6% chance of getting their first win of the season, and while a point would not be unwelcome, there is a 19.8% chance that result will pass.

Two teams still seeking their first win of the campaign go head-to-head on Sunday, with Brighton and Aston Villa both drawing one and losing one game apiece so far.

It is Brighton who are expected to come out on top, with a 51% win probability to Villa’s 24.1%, though there is a 24.9% chance of another stalemate.

Indeed, the Seagulls are winless across their last five WSL matches (D3 L2) and could go winless across their opening three games of a campaign for the third time.

Villa, meanwhile, have won just one of their last 12 WSL games (D2 L9), and in that period (since January 22) have won the fewest points (five) and lost the most matches (nine) of any ever-present top-flight side.

But the Villans have won five of their last seven WSL meetings with Brighton (D1 L1) and hold their most wins overall in the competition against the Seagulls (seven).

Crystal Palace and Tottenham are both unbeaten so far this season, and this clash is almost too close for the supercomputer to call, with the Eagles winning 37.8% of the simulations to Spurs’ 35.8%.

Spurs have won all four of their meetings with Palace across all competitions as a WSL side by an aggregate score of 12-2, so this could be their first dropped points against them in the competition, with a 26.4% chance of a draw.

Palace have avoided defeat in back-to-back WSL matches for the very first time (W1 D1), though, and could become the first newly promoted side to go unbeaten across their opening three games of a season in the competition.

But Spurs are unbeaten in each of their last five games in the WSL and could go six on the bounce without defeat for the first time since November 2023.

While the last fixture was a tight call, it is West Ham v Everton that is the most likely draw of the matchday at 26.7%.

Both teams opened the league season with a defeat before earning their first wins last weekend, but West Ham have not recorded back-to-back wins for the first time on home soil in the WSL since February 2025, with that run including a 2-0 victory over Everton.

There is a 42.8% chance of a West Ham victory on Sunday, better than Everton’s 30.5%.

That is because Everton have won just one of their last four matches against West Ham in the WSL (D1 L2), although that victory was in their most recent meeting, a 1-0 home win in February this year.
