Wolves appoint Peixoto after Edwards dismissal

Cesar Peixoto has outlined his desire to get Wolves back into the Premier League after being appointed as the club’s new head coach on Monday. 

Peixoto, who has put pen to paper on a two-year contract with Wolves, arrives at Molineux Stadium to replace Rob Edwards, who was sacked last week. 

The 46-year-old was most recently in charge of Gil Vicente, who he led to a sixth-placed finish in the Primeira Liga last season, just missing out on the European places. 

He takes over a Wolves side that finished the 2025-26 Premier League campaign with three wins, their lowest total ever in a league campaign which saw them relegated. 

Wolves will play in the Championship for the first time since 2018, though Peixoto does not intend to stay in the second tier for very long. 

“I’m proud to be here at this big, historic club in England,” Peixoto told Wolves’ official club website. 

“It’s a big opportunity for me, and I’m prepared to do everything to put Wolves where it belongs in the Premier League.

“We have great players, but I think the team can improve a lot with me and I can improve as a technical head coach. 

“This is an amazing club, and it is important for me to make Wolves play in a way which reflects the fans.

“I want the supporters to be proud of our players, be proud of the way we play and the way we fight game after game to bring victory, and to achieve the main aim, which is to put Wolves back in the Premier League.”

Wolves also became only the seventh side to fail to win a single away game in a Premier League season, and the first since Hull City in 2009-10.

Edwards was only named as Vitor Pereira’s successor last November and was seen as a long-term appointment despite their relegation to the Championship. 

He did, however, win just three of his 27 Premier League matches in charge of Wolves (L15 D20), with his side scoring just 20 goals across those games.

Wolves’ rebuild for life back in the Championship has already begun, with Kieran Trippier and Raul Jimenez signing, the latter returning for a second stint at the club.
