The unusual scene unfolded during Atlanta’s 109-77 victory when Mystics coach Sydney Johnson was ejected following a heated confrontation with game officials. Within moments, police officers appeared on the floor and accompanied Johnson to the locker room, creating one of the most talked-about moments of the WNBA weekend.

While the sight of law enforcement on the court immediately sparked questions online, Johnson later made it clear that the situation stemmed from his own frustration during the game.

The Angel Reese play that changed everything

The sequence began with 3:52 remaining in the third quarter. Atlanta star Angel Reese drove toward the basket and Washington guard Alicia Florez Getino was called for a defensive foul. Johnson strongly disagreed with the decision and quickly left the bench area to argue with officials.

What followed was an extended exchange that continued even as assistant coaches and players attempted to calm him down. Rookie standout Kiki Iriafen was among those trying to diffuse the situation, but Johnson continued expressing his frustration. Officials eventually assessed two technical fouls and ejected him from the game.

Moments later, three police officers walked onto the court and escorted Johnson toward the locker room.

Why police officers got involved

Despite the dramatic visuals, there was no indication of any criminal issue or security threat. The officers were simply assisting with the ejection process after Johnson refused to immediately disengage from the officials during the argument.

Following the game, Johnson took responsibility for the incident.

“I lost my cool,” Johnson told reporters afterward. “There’s nothing more than that. That’s it. Officials did what was appropriate, and that’s all I can say.”

The veteran coach declined to elaborate on exactly what upset him about the call involving Reese, choosing instead to focus on his team’s performance.

Johnson didn’t want the moment to define his team

The loss itself was a difficult one for Washington. The Mystics trailed by 21 points when Johnson was ejected and eventually suffered their worst defeat of the season. Atlanta dominated throughout the second half behind another strong performance from Reese, who finished with 18 points, 17 rebounds and four steals.

Afterward, Johnson made it clear he didn’t want his actions overshadowing his players.

“Not a great moment for our team or me,” Johnson said. “But that certainly doesn’t define the togetherness, the toughness, the joy we have.”

The Mystics entered the season as the youngest team in the WNBA with an average age of just 23.4 years. Johnson has frequently spoken about helping his young roster navigate difficult moments, which made Saturday’s emotional outburst especially unusual.
