Will Yan Diomande work out at Real Madrid?

· · 3 min read

Kevin Hatchard believes Real Madrid‘s massive investment in Yan Diomande could ultimately prove worthwhile, arguing that the winger’s talent and potential justify the enormous fee involved.

Hatchard is an experienced football broadcaster, writer, and commentator who has built a reputation as one of the leading English-language voices covering German football. He has worked extensively with the BBC, ESPN, and other major outlets, regularly providing analysis on the Bundesliga and its players.

Diomande emerged as one of the Bundesliga’s biggest young stars with RB Leipzig during the 2025/26 season. The 19-year-old Ivory Coast international scored 13 goals and provided 10 assists in all competitions, helping establish himself as one of Europe’s most exciting young attackers. Real Madrid eventually completed his transfer from Leipzig in August, signing him to a contract through 2033.

Hatchard believes the competition for Diomande explains why Madrid had to pay such a significant price.

“The fee is justified in the sense that PSG wanted him, Liverpool wanted him, Madrid wanted him, so three of the biggest clubs on the planet want to sign the same player, then he’s going to cost a hell of a lot of money. The other thing you have to factor in there is that Leipzig didn’t want to sell. So, because of that combination, the price was very high. He was phenomenal last season, and his potential is enormous. This is a guy that’s got skill one on one, he’s got pace, he’s got work rate, he’s got technique, he can pass, he can shoot. He’s dangerous off the left, he’s dangerous off the right,” Hatchard told Casino.org. “He can do everything, and the sky’s the limit for him, and I think if he could work well with Mourinho, I’d expect him to do really well in La Liga.”

There is certainly plenty of reason for optimism. Diomande offers Madrid versatility across the attack, while his pace and one-on-one ability give José Mourinho another dynamic option alongside established stars such as Kylian Mbappé and Vinícius Júnior.

Mourinho has already emphasized that Diomande was a player he wanted, making the relationship between manager and youngster particularly important.

The price tag will inevitably create pressure, especially because Diomande became the most expensive signing in Real Madrid’s history. But if Hatchard is right about his enormous potential, that pressure could eventually look like a bargain.

Diomande’s start at Real Madrid has been uneven. The 19-year-old arrived from RB Leipzig with enormous expectations and initially had to settle for substitute appearances as he adapted to Mourinho’s system. He made his first Real Madrid start against Rayo Vallecano on Saturday, although his performance was viewed as relatively quiet despite showing flashes of his quality.

The important thing is that Mourinho appears willing to give Diomande time to develop. He has already praised the youngster’s quality, while Diomande’s pace, dribbling and versatility remain obvious assets. At this stage, patience will be important as he adjusts to the pressure of being one of Real Madrid’s most expensive signings.
