Will Smith's I Am Legend Is Now Streaming For Free On Tubi
Will Smith’s $585 million hit I Am Legend is now free to watch on Tubi. Released in 2007, the sci-fi thriller stars Smith as Robert Neville, a military scientist who believes he’s the last person alive in New York City. He and his dog, Sam, search for supplies during daylight, then retreat home before the infected emerge. Neville is immune to the virus that destroyed the city’s population, and he’s still trying to develop a cure.
Director Francis Lawrence lets the empty city do much of the work early on. Neville can race a car down a Manhattan avenue without hitting traffic. He also keeps broadcasting a message promising food and shelter, hoping someone will answer. At a video store, he greets mannequins as though they’re regular customers. Smith makes those exchanges awkward and sad, especially when Neville struggles to approach one as if he’s nervous about introducing himself.
Independence Day and Men in Black gave Smith other actors to joke and argue with while saving the world. I Am Legend leaves him alone for much of its runtime, and he makes Neville’s need for company as urgent as his search for a cure. Watching someone usually so easy in conversation struggle without anyone to talk to is still one of I am Legend’s best ideas.

I Am Legend is available free with ads on Tubi through November 30, 2026. The service lists a runtime of 101 minutes and a PG-13 rating. One of its most frightening scenes follows Neville into a dark building after Sam chases a deer inside. Armed with a flashlight, he searches rooms where the infected shelter from daylight, knowing that making noise could alert them.
The infected also dictate how Neville lives when he’s home. Before nightfall, he closes heavy shutters over the windows and locks the house down. He sleeps in the bathtub with Sam, keeping a rifle within reach even behind those defenses. Locking the doors is just one of the precautions he takes to get through the night.
Audiences turned out for that bleak version of a Will Smith blockbuster. I Am Legend earned approximately $585 million worldwide against a reported $150 million production budget, finishing seventh among 2007’s highest-grossing movies (via TheNumbers). Most films above it belonged to existing franchises, including Pirates of the Caribbean, Harry Potter, and Spider-Man. Smith’s movie had Richard Matheson’s 1954 I am Legend novel behind it, but no previous installment brought viewers back. A movie that spends long stretches with Smith talking to his dog ended up outgrossing The Simpsons Movie and The Bourne Ultimatum (via TheNumbers).
Why It Remains One Of Will Smith’s Best Sci-Fi Movies Nearly 20 Years Later

Smith makes Neville convincing as a scientist who still believes he can find a cure, even as living alone begins to overwhelm him. When he finds Fred, a mannequin from his video store, standing near Grand Central Terminal, he demands an explanation from it. Smith’s cracking voice makes the outburst upsetting rather than ridiculous. A scientist who should know exactly what he’s looking at can’t trust his own judgment, and that makes him more interesting than someone who always has the answer.
With Sam, Neville gets to be a little silly. He sings Bob Marley while giving her a bath and talks to her as though she owes him a response. Smith is funny and affectionate in those scenes, making it easy to understand why Neville risks entering a dark building to bring her home in I Am Legend. A cure might bring other people back into his life someday. Sam is already there, keeping him company through the failed experiments and empty streets.
Smith gets plenty of laughs arguing with Tommy Lee Jones in Men in Black, and his cocky pilot is a highlight of Independence Day. Neville gives him a harder job. He has to make talking to a dog feel natural and shouting at a mannequin genuinely upsetting. Will Smith pulls off both without making Neville seem like two different people. Smith’s performance in I Am Legend is a performance worth coming back for, even when the scares are no longer a surprise.
