The Pittsburgh Steelers have an interesting quarterback competition for the backup role.
Pittsburgh re-signed Aaron Rodgers to a one-year deal, as he will be the starter. The Steelers have Mason Rudolph, Will Howard, and rookie Drew Allar competing for the backup job.
Although Howard has gotten rave reviews for his development, Steelers reporter Alan Saunders of SteelersNow predicted Howard would be the odd man out.
“This might be the toughest cut on the team,” Saunders wrote. “The Steelers are legitimately going to give Will Howard every possibly opportunity to beat out Mason Rudolph for the backup quarterback job, and even though he’s never taken a single NFL snap, I’m not going to say he can’t win it either. Third-round picks don’t get cut, so I assume Drew Allar is safe unless he’s injured, meaning it will likely be backup or nothing for Howard.”
With Allar likely penciled in as the third-string development quarterback, it is a roster battle between Howard and Rudolph for the backup spot. However, it does appear that Howard would have the inside track to winning the job, so seeing him being cut would be a shock.
Yet, Howard has all of training camp and preseason games to prove that he should be the Steelers’ backup quarterback over Rudolph.
Pittsburgh begins training camp on July 28.
